The basic goals behind the green building movement are the same as the goals of sustainability that we should all embrace: the utilization and conservation of resources for the long term. We have a finite amount of resources on this planet. Those resources must be conserved in order to use them for the future. In construction, whether commercial or residential, the tenets of building green are simple: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Renewables.
* REDUCE the amount of building materials. Increase energy efficiency, therefore decreasing wasted energy supplies. Also decrease the secondary resources used in the construction process such as fossil fuels and water.
* REUSE any possible building materials.
* RECYCLE. Whether it's older homes in need of rescue, household fixtures, or building materials, recycling is an under-utilized practice. There is a vast supply of resources out there, it simply takes a little extra planning to incorporate them into a project.
* RENEWABLES. Energy sources and building materials can be chosen today that are sustainable for the long term. More of these products and systems are being used in modern construction and retrofitting.
