Families who have children with asthma and allergies (food, insect, latex, etc.) can smooth the transition from summer to school with a little advance planning. Here are a few tips to help you be proactive for the coming school year:

- Familiarize yourself with existing state and federal guidelines and school policies for managing asthma and allergies in schools. (www.StateHonorRoll.org)
- Meet the teacher(s), school nurse, and principal to discuss your child’s asthma/allergy.
- Review and update your child’s Asthma/Allergy Emergency Action Plan, medical information and contact information on file with the school.
- Make a list, prepare, and pack the items you need to drop off at the health office and classroom for the first day of school.
Prepare your child - teach him/her in an age-appropriate way about what to do/not do to stay safe at school.
